Bauman College provided the knowledge, support and structure for me to make not only a career change, but a life change."

I entered the Nutrition Consultant (NC) program in 2003 as a mother of 4 year old twins, looking for a career change. 15 years earlier, I had graduated from Occidental College in LA with a degree in Diplomacy and World Affairs. After school, I basically ‘fell’ into consumer products marketing, and was soon working for a specialty food company that made rum butter cakes (yummy? yes! healthy? not exactly!). I subsequently worked for 6+ years in marketing for Ghirardelli Chocolate Company. When I gave birth to twin girls, I decided to take some time off, which gave me time to reflect on what I wanted to do with my career.

Over the years, I had become passionate about nutrition, organic food and natural health. I had always been a ‘foodie’ and I loved cooking and eating. And as much as I enjoyed specialty food marketing, I really wanted to do something that would have a positive impact in the world. So it made perfect sense to me to enroll at Bauman College. Not only did the NC program give me the knowledge to start a career of nutrition educating and consulting, but it also gave me invaluable information to guide & nurture my own family’s nutrition and health.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time as a student at Bauman College. There was a broad range of information & resources presented, so that students could delve deeper into the areas that interested them. I ended up having a particular interest in digestive physiology (and even taught the course for a time at Bauman College). In addition, I had many great instructors who offered help and support as needed. Ed Bauman was a great mentor and provided a wonderful role model of how to really connect with clients to see what may be underneath their words.

My work now is multi-faceted. I have my own nutrition consulting practice (Foodworks), in which I work with clients one-on-one as well as leading group cleansing programs. My specialties include weight management, digestive concerns, and cleansing/detoxification. I am also a practitioner with Ed Bauman’s ‘Bauman Nutrition Clinic’. In addition, I have recently partnered with a life and business coach to lead “Healthy Living” groups. These include a 4-week cleanse followed by 8 weeks of group meetings to provide accountability and support.

Of course, there are challenges and obstacles as with any line of work. Change is hard for most people, and changing habits around food & health can be very difficult. So finding ways to support clients as they make changes is critical. Without a doubt, the best part of my work is seeing clients empowered to reach their health goals. Witnessing improvement in someone’s quality of life is so incredibly rewarding as a practitioner!

Bauman College provided the knowledge, support and structure for me to make not only a career change, but a life change. Thanks to Ed, Tom, Laura and everyone at Bauman College.
